How to Choose the Best Media to Preserve Your Photos, Videos and Audio

As many of you, like me, are using ImageMixer to archive your photographs and share them with friends and family, I want to bring your attention to the quality of media you are using.  In recent years, all you see in the store are specials for hundreds of blank CDs at very, very low prices.  What the average person, and major retailers such as Best Buy and Wal Mart, for that matter, don't realize, is that low-cost CD-Rs and DVD media do not have a long shelf life.  There have been reports that some CD-Rs are unreadable in as little as two years.

The Future of the Paperless Office

Years ago I remember reading about the “paperless office.” Somehow the makers of computers, hard drives and other storage types were telling everyone that everything could and would be stored in an electronic format and these records would be safe and easy to retrieve. Today I realize that this perspective seemed to be more a dream then a forecast of the future.

Controlling the Marauders' Charge!

My household eats AA batteries! I don't know where they go, but it seems that at least once a week one of my kids is asking me for two or three more for their Lego robot or their camera or some other invention that they've crafted together with glue, string, and an electric motor. Of course, they want batteries that are fully charged yesterday. That's a little difficult to deliver on demand, especially since I haven't yet invested in a time machine.

Of course, my reserve supply for my digital camera (also not exactly a frugal user of power) has long since been raided to extinction. I long ago discovered rechargeable NiMH batteries, but I always discover that the only ones available in the house on the afternoon of the Karate grading are in my camera and are run down. What to do?

Editing MPEG Files and the Basics of Frame Editing/Group of Picture Editing

If you wish to edit MPEG files, it is important to understand the basics of MPEG compression and the main differences between “frame editing” and “Group of Picture (GOP) editing.”
Let’s first start by stating that MPEG compression was not developed with the intention of supporting precise editing. Instead, MPEG serves as a high-powered compression tool made for pre-edited video. Nevertheless, with some fundamental knowledge and appropriate tools, it is possible to perform highly accurate edits of MPEG files.

Prolonging Birthday Party Ambiance

It's no secret that kids love birthday parties. But, as all parents know, kids live in the moment and, after the excitement of the party has worn off, there remains little or no memory of the event except in photos or videos. In the past, we tended to think of photos as subject to delay in becoming useful due to the time needed to have film developed, choose prints, etc. But the immediacy provided by digital photography has changed that time horizon forever.
