Controlling the Marauders' Charge!
By Richard Sikes
My household eats AA batteries! I don't know where they go, but it seems that at
least once a week one of my kids is asking me for two or three more for their
Lego robot or their camera or some other invention that they've crafted together
with glue, string, and an electric motor. Of course, they want batteries that
are fully charged yesterday. That's a little difficult to deliver on demand,
especially since I haven't yet invested in a time machine.
Of course, my reserve supply for my digital
camera (also not exactly a frugal user of power) has long since been raided to
extinction. I long ago discovered rechargeable NiMH batteries, but I always
discover that the only ones available in the house on the afternoon of the
Karate grading are in my camera and are run down. What to do?
The lifesaver appeared in the form of a
Maxell P2004
one-hour battery charger, complete with 4 AA batteries. Now I can forget to
recharge my camera's batteries until at least an hour prior to departure for the
Karate event. Or, I can plug into a wall socket in the dojo while the
registration and warm-up is taking place, and then have my batteries ready by
the time the individual kata and ensuing new belt presentation ceremony rolls
around. Whew! I escaped being scolded by my wife and boys once again!
My charger will even charge up Maxell AAA NiMH
batteries! It also has a plug that folds neatly into the unit's casing. This not
only reduces the size and somewhat awkward shape produced by the plug prongs on
most chargers, but also prevents my worrying about it catching threads or
getting caught when I remove it.
And now, here's another secret shared in
confidence: While picking up the charger, I also bought a couple of extra packs
of batteries. They are hidden in the medicine cabinet in my bathroom. Shhhh!
Don't tell the boys! Actually, I'm not too worried. Their bright yellow colour
makes them easily distinguishable from the rest of the batteries in the house,
so if the secret about my cache escapes and a raid is mounted, I can easily spot
and reclaim my own stock from the marauders' clutches.
